- BY STAFF REPORTER

ARLENE Foster has warmly welcomed new US Consul General Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau to Belfast.

Ms Trudeau, who officially began her stint in the role earlier this week, met with the DUP leader at the US Consulate in the city yesterday.

The US Foreign Service member succeeds Daniel Lawton, who stepped down from the role last month for his next assignment in Washington DC.

Ms Trudeau’s previous assignment was as US Consul General in Lahore, Pakistan.

Mrs Foster tweeted her welcome to Ms Trudeau, revealing that they had also discussed major political issues affecting the province.

“Welcome to Northern Ireland for the new US Consul General Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau. Good discussions on EU exit, devolution and our local economy #proudofNI,” she tweeted.

This was followed by Secretary of State Karen Bradley who, in a statement tweeted via the NIO, said she was delighted to welcome Ms Trudeau.

“It is an incredibly important time with the focus on a clear plan to restore devolution and I look forward to working closely together,” she added.

Prior to her latest role, Ms Trudeau — who joined the Foreign Service in 2004 — has held prominent roles in Washington DC.

Her other postings have included the US mission to (NATO) in Brussels, and Press attache to the US mission to Pretoria, South Africa.
