Boss hails side’s ‘stunning’ win which puts them in second spot

- BY PAUL BURROWS

STEVEN Gerrard hailed a “stunning” Rangers display as the Ibrox side capped a positive week by trouncing St Johnstone.

Three days on from a fine Europa League draw with Villarreal, the Gers — who put four unanswered goals past Dundee in their previous Premiership outing — soared into second spot in the table thanks to strikes from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield, Kyle Lafferty and Daniel Candeias.

“We are very happy as a staff. We asked the players to come in with the right attitude, the right mentality and forget about Thursday night,” said Gerrard.

“I thought at times we played some really stunning football, and we certainly deserved to win by a big margin today, and we got that with five different goalscorers.

“St Johnstone go away today, and I will be interested to hear what their manager says and what their players think of today.

“But that is what it has to be about here. We have to show people what we are about, we have to play our way and we have to make it uncomfortable for teams.

“That looked uncomfortable for St Johnstone, and that is how I want it.

“I was really happy with the second half over in Villarreal when you take into account the opposition the stage and going behind a couple of times.

“I thought we played some really good stuff and some of the goals were outstanding. Today, in patches, was some of the best football I have seen from us.

“We move the ball quick in tight areas and we move it from one side of the pitch to the other and we wait for that opening.

“That is what we are trying to become. Players are going to make mistakes, and when we do, it’s my fault as I am asking them to play the way I want them to.

He added: “We want them to express themselves in the right areas, and we will protect them as they are trying to do it the right way, which is good, exciting attacking football.”
