Unrepentant people warned by Jesus

-

I READ with interest Brian McClinton’s letter of September 21 on the Sodom story. His explanation is credible and I note that he does not challenge the veracity of the account which includes the destruction of the cities.

Donald J Morrison has gone out on a limb. I would not myself venture to draw a conclusion in any particular case.

Nevertheless there is a coming day of judgement when all will be accountable to God.

In his address to the Athenian philosophers at Mars Hill, Paul declared: “God now commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” Acts 17:30-31.

No one can be acquitted on the day of judgement because all have sinned. Romans 3:23.

But Jesus bore the judgement for our sins on the cross so that we can be declared righteous if we put our faith in him. Paul wrote that “if you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved.” Romans 10:9.

Jesus warned the cities which remained unrepentant in spite of seeing his miracles that they would fare worse than Sodom on the day of judgement, for had those people seen such things they would have repented.
