Moffatt sends Bann to the summit as focus switches to Garvey clash

- BY GRAHAM HAMILTON

BANBRIDGE coach Mark Tumilty is refusing to get carried away after watching his side chalk up wins in their first two EY Irish Hockey League games to go top of the table.

A brace of goals from midfielder Josh Moffatt earned them a 3-1 success over Cork C of I and, added to the previous week’s 4-3 win over all-Ireland champions Three Rock, it augurs well.

But Tumilty knows he needs to keep his side focused — especially as next up are Lisnagarvey.

John Jermyn put Cork ahead with a penalty stroke, but Bann’s pressure told when Moffatt deflected home, Eugene Magee put away a penalty corner and Moffatt deflected in his second goal.

Garvey coach Errol Lutton could hardly hide his smile as his young side ran up a 4-0 win at Cookstown, with Irish international striker Matthew Nelson bagging a double.

Two other Nelsons, older brother Daniel and younger brother Ben, also featured in the game, a first to see three siblings playing alongside each other in the all-Ireland set-up.

Annadale, though, are still pointless after two games after going down 2-1 to Glenanne.

Meanwhile, Queen’s sit top of the Ulster Premier League after making it three wins from three by edging out Antrim 3-2, but Kilkeel’s revival to come from 4-1 down to beat North Down 5-4 was the main talking point.
