Tribute to ‘kind and loving’ US honeymooner

- BY CLAIRE WILLIAMSON

THE family of a American man killed in a crash while on honeymoon in Northern Ireland have told of their heartbreak as they paid tribute to him as a “kind, loving man”.

Michael Monroe (31) died after a crash last Tuesday, September 25. His partner Caroline was also injured in the accident which happened near the Dark Hedges — which feature in the popular television series Game of Thrones.

Michael and his wife, Caroline from Orange in Connecticut, were on a “dream trip” to Northern Ireland and were having a “wonderful time”, their family said.

Caroline’s mother Aileen McKenna and brother Will Braaksma paid tribute to Michael who they said was a “kind, loving man, a teacher beloved by his family, friends and students, but especially by his beautiful bride Caroline and their two dogs, Monty and Milo”.

They said: “We are heartbroken over the loss of our sweet Michael Monroe. Michael and Caroline were on their honeymoon, a dream trip they planned and saved for, a year after their July 2017 wedding. They were having a wonderful time loving this beautiful country.”

But the family said their tragic loss has been eased by the kindness and support they had received here.

The family requested privacy as Caroline heals from her injuries and grieves this “dreadful loss, re-imagining a future without her sweet Michael”.
