We’re doing our best with quality we have: Jose

- BY MARK MANN-BRYANS

MANCHESTER United boss Jose Mourinho cast doubt on the quality of his squad after another uninspiring display last night.

United remain stuck in a rut after a stuttering goalless draw with Valencia in the Champions League that extends their winless run and keeps the pressure on Mourinho.

“The players tried,” he said. “They raised the level of their efforts. They raised the level of their intensity in spite of the fact that we don’t have many with that intensity. We don’t have the technical quality to build from the back.

“We tried to do something we did well which was to stop a fast team on the counter attack. We knew we wouldn’t create 20 chances.

“Our attacking players aren’t in their best moments of confidence and individual level. We thought with three or four chances we would score and win.

“We had a couple of the biggest chances to win but I have accepted the result as a fair one.

“I said in pre-season that last season, it was phenomenal to finish second (in the Premier League). I don’t say any more.

“It is not a bad result. Not a good result, but not bad. We have two matches against Juventus to make up points. It is a very difficult group.

“We have Newcastle before the league stops (for the international break) then we have Chelsea and Juventus in the space of three days. It will be good for the team if we can beat Newcastle.”

Defender Chris Smalling insisted the dressing room was united.

“The dressing room is united. We’re sticking together to make sure we turn it around,” he said.

“We’re talented players and it is that confidence, mentally it is tough, we know how important the home games are but we turn our heads to Saturday now.

“We grew in the second half, you can tell we’re disappointed we didn’t get the goal we deserved in the second half.

“You’re just after anything, We couldn’t get the goal and we’re disappointed. We have to stand tall. We’re going through a tough patch and we’re the only ones who can turn it around.”

United are second in Group H on four points, two behind leaders Juventus, who defeated Swiss side Young Boys 3-0 and will travel to Old Trafford on October 23 with Cristiano Ronaldo restored to their ranks.
