Gibson and Armstrong set for thrilling take-off at St Angelo Airfield

THE penultimate round of the AJ Plumbing Ulster Superbike Championship takes place at St Angelo Airfield tomorrow — under the auspices of Enniskillen and District Motorcycle Club — with third place in the series still up for grabs.

Gerard Kinghan has already wrapped up the Superbike series from Alistair Kirk, but the battle still rages for third between Ryan Gibson and Aaron Armstrong.

In Supersport, Jason Lynn can wrap up the championship in the first of two races tomorrow if his current run of form is maintained while in the Cup class everything is to play for with Jack Waring a mere four points ahead of Ryan Fenton as Simon Reid, 32 points behind the former, hopes to overhaul both in the final four races.

Paul Robinson has added the Moto3 Short Circuit Championship to his Irish Road Race series success while Gary McCoy and Joshua Rae are the Lightweight Supersport and Young Guns champions respectively.

All other classes are still up for grabs at the Enniskillen 100 Revival ninth round of the series where practice commences at 9am followed by racing from 11am.

The final round of the series is incorporated in the Sunflower Trophy meeting at Bishopscourt on October 19/20 with the Hillsborough Club announcing that Hawk Racing Buildbase Suzuki rider Richard Cooper will be heading to the Co Down venue.

The 35-year-old finished fifth in the second BSB race at Assen on Sunday, just two seconds behind the Tyco BMW of Michael Laverty, and has in the past won the BMW Boxer Cup and British Superstock 1000cc championships.

Stuart Hicken and his team hope to field an as yet unnamed second rider for the Sunflower Trophy that Hawk Racing have yet to win.

Cooper said: “I’ve tried to get to the Sunflower a few times, but it often clashed with other events I was contracted to. The bikes are good enough to win and I’m good enough, so no reason we can’t have a good go at it this year.”

Meanwhile, Irish Motocross des Nations Team Manager Phillip McCullough has had to call in a last minute replacement after Graeme Irwin was injured during the Italian MXGP last weekend, suffering a broken wrist and scaphoid bone.

McCullough hastily drafted in Gary Gibson at very short notice to join Martin Barr and Richard Bird prior to flying out to Buchanan in Michigan, USA for this weekend’s team event at Red Bud.

It has also been announced that MotoGP rider Scott Redding will replace Glenn Irwin in the PBM Be Wiser Ducati team for the 2019 British Superbike Championship, the Ulsterman having switched to the JG Speedfit Kawasaki outfit for 2019.
