Supreme Court finds Ashers did not discriminate in ‘same-sex cake’ case

-

Hilary Hanlon: They won their right to their views and beliefs. It should never have got to this stage. The money spent on this case was ridiculous. Well done, Ashers.

Billy Lennox: Anyone has a right to do business with whom they please. It should not have ended up in court. Who will have to pay the legal costs?

Joe McGuigan: European Court of Human Rights will hopefully overturn this. Free speech is totally fine. Believe whatever you like. But, if you open a business where you serve the public, you must treat everyone equally.

Antoin MacLochlainn: Very sad day. Hugely damaging. LGBT in the North now expected to consider where they shop.

Jayne Browne McClenaghan: Antoin MacLochlainn, that is nonsense. Everyone can shop anywhere. John Kerr: Antoin MacLochlainn, maybe I will consider where I shop if the likes of Primark promote what should be private beliefs in a window display.

Megan L Potts: John Kerr, you think that supporting love should be a privately held view? I think supporting discrimination should.

Emma Harley: It’s 2018. Wouldn’t matter what the cake was, or what was on it. There are loads of bakeries that do novelty cakes and, in the same day, make a baptism or a wedding, cake. Religion has no place in business.

Tom Marshall: My bank had signs on their TVs and computers, saying ‘We Support Pride’. I said I was offended. I was told I could take my account elsewhere. Could I have taken them to court?

Don Tovey: Surely, Christians have a right to their beliefs, as do gay people? John Noble: The judgment states it was not discrimination. How much more clearer could that be?

Lee-Ann Napier: If someone goes into a bakery and wants “In God We Trust” on a cake, someone who doesn’t believe in God can say, “No, we won’t write that” and that’s okay? The Supreme Court said you don’t have to write what you don’t believe in. People who support this need to think about where this could lead.
