Police appeal after man’s body is found on NI beach

- BY CATE MCCURRY

THE body of a man discovered on a beach in Co Down yesterday has yet to be identified, police have said.

The body was discovered by a man shortly before 5am yesterday in Newcastle and the town’s promenade was sealed off. It is understood at this stage the discovery is not being treated as suspicious.

The PSNI said the man is white, aged between 50-70, bald on top with short grey hair to the sides, of medium build and was found wearing a white Ballybunion Golf Club polo shirt. Ballybunion Golf Club is in Co Kerry.

A PSNI detective said: “We have carried out a number of enquiries at the scene and in the general Newcastle area and at this stage we do not believe the death of the man to be suspicious.

“Unfortunately we have been unable to identify the deceased and I am appealing for assistance from the public.

“If anyone can help us to identify this gentleman, or has information that could help with our enquiries, please contact officers in Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 149 11/10/18.”

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath appealed for information to be passed to the police. The MLA for South Down said: “My sympathies go out to the family of the individual. The local community are in shock, but I have no doubt they will support one another at this time. I would encourage anyone who may have information to contact the PSNI.”
