Deja vu for Nixon as Ards lose to another late goal

- BY STEVEN BEACOM

COLIN Nixon was left with an empty feeling again when, for the second league game in succession, his Ards team lost to a late goal.

Being defeated 1-0 in injury time at home to Institute was tough to take but suffering the same fate at Warrenpoint Town on Saturday hurt even more.

Nixon has been unlucky with injuries this season with key personnel missing but he is also honest enough to say that the players available to him need to give more to get themselves out of this rut.

Perhaps he can use Warrenpoint as inspiration. They were beaten in their first six league outings but since then have secured 11 points out of 15 and have moved to ninth.

Stephen McDonnell’s men have become the kings of late goals. Alan O’Sullivan popped up with the decisive strike at the weekend after some brilliant wing play from the highly impressive Ciaran O’Connor.

Nixon was in reflective mood about his team’s latest reverse but, as always, determined and driven to put things right.

“I don’t think we are playing a particularly good brand of football at present and I’m disappointed to come away with nothing again,” he said.

“We have to get back to the drawing board and work harder than we are doing.”

Ards are at home to league leaders Linfield next so things aren’t going to get any easier. For Warrenpoint it is a trip to Cliftonville, the team they started their superb run against scoring an injury time double to triumph 2-1.
