Bank of England urges NI people to have their say on the economy next month
THE Bank of England is urging the public in Northern Ireland to have their say on how the economy is working for them.
Chief economist Andy Haldane will join the first meeting of its new Citizens’ Panel for Northern Ireland in Londonderry next month.
The panel will give people the chance to discuss all aspects of the economy including jobs, pay, the cost of living, the housing market and people’s attitudes to saving and spending.
Mr Haldane urged people from across Northern Ireland to get involved.
He said: “This is a landmark event for the Bank of England as we seek to deepen our understanding of the economic issues that are affecting communities and citizens across the whole of the UK. I am delighted it is taking place in Northern Ireland.
“Our view of the economy, and our setting of economic policy, will be greatly enhanced by listening to people in Northern Ireland’s views on the issues that really matter to their lives.”
Applications to join the panel are now open. The Bank hopes to attract a wide range of participants from a variety of backgrounds from across the province, and anyone over the age of 18 is able to apply.
The Bank is working with the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland to assist with recruitment of panel members.
The first meeting of the panel will take place from 6-9pm on Tuesday, November 27. It will be chaired by Frances Hill the Bank of England’s agent in Northern Ireland. Her deputy Gillian Anderson will facilitate part of the session.
Ms Hill said: “I hope that we can attract a wide range of applications to join the panel from people across the province so that we can hear from as many diverse voices as possible.
“You don’t need to be an expert on the economy to come along — we want to talk about the things that matter to us all such as jobs and pay and the cost of living.
“Although we can’t guarantee a place for everyone at this first event, the initiative is ongoing so there will be more opportunities for members of the public to engage with the Bank.
“We will also set up an online community for members of the panels to take part in discussions and share views outside of the meetings.”
