Carnlough hotel welcomes U2 guitarist as he calls in for lunch
U2 star The Edge made a surprise stop at a seaside hotel as he broke off from the band’s world tour to visit the Antrim coast.
The 57-year-old musician, whose real name is David Howell Evans, dropped in at The Londonderry Arms in Carnlough on Monday afternoon.
The rock legends had delighted their Belfast fans with two sell-out shows at the SSE Arena on Saturday and Sunday night.
They are now taking a week off before playing a four-date run in their native Dublin at the 3Arena.
Management at The Londonderry Arms said they were “thrilled” to welcome The Edge to the hotel for lunch.
Built in 1848 by the Marchioness of Londonderry as a coaching inn, the hotel once belonged to the family of Sir Winston Churchill.
The musician happily posed alongside a portrait of the former Prime Minister during his visit.
A hotel spokesperson said: “The Edge was totally fascinated with the hotel and its history. He was just so accommodating and happily agreed to have his photo taken with fans and staff as well as sign autographs. He said he had read about the hotel and the local area and had been really keen to check it out.“
Among those to bump into The Edge was Carnlough teenager Alexandra Rosbotham.
The 17-year-old said: “I have been listening to the band since I was no age so they have sort of been ingrained into me.”
