Fenton lands Footballer of Year title
DUBLIN midfield ace Brian Fenton, a driving force in the team’s fourth consecutive All-Ireland title triumph, has won the coveted Footballer of the Year award.
Fenton’s consistency and pronounced influence in Jim Gavin’s side ensures that he is destined to be regarded as one of the greatest-ever midfielders to grace gaelic football.
His aerial ability, clever distribution and work-rate certainly mark 24-year-old Fenton down as a stellar performer who has still a lot more to offer.
The Young Footballer of the Year award has been picked up by Kerry’s David Clifford who created a huge impact in his first season at senior level.
Clifford plays with a poise and aplomb that belie his tender years and he is expected to be part of the Kingdom forward machinery for years to come.
In tomorrow’s Ulster Junior Football Championship semi-finals, Limavady Wolfhounds expect to have Australia-bound Callum Brown on board for their tie against Fermanagh champions Aghadrumsee at Healy Park, Omagh (4.30pm).
Brown will shortly commence a career in the AFL but can still help to drive Limavady into the provincial junior decider.
Aghadrumsee will look to the talented Eddie Courtney to spark their scoring return.
In the other semi-final high-scoring Emyvale take on Donegal side Red Hughs at Healy Park tomorrow (2.30pm).
In beating Cavan champions Drumlane and Tyrone standard-bearers Newtownstewart, Emyvale racked up big totals but may find that Red Hughs will offer stout resistance tomorrow.
In the Ulster Club Ladies Senior Football Championship, Donaghmoyne will be playing in their 15th consecutive decider when they meet Donegal side Glenfin at Killyclogher today (3.00pm).
Donaghmoyne have been the real power-brokers in the ladies game and they are expected to add to their phenomenal record of titles today.
They defeated St Macartan’s of Tyrone in the semi-final by 3-7 to 1-11 and showed their staying power and finishing skills in that game.
Today the Monaghan champions will look to players such as Fiona Courtney, Sharon Courtney, Lauren Kerley and Amy Garland to fire up their challenge against their Donegal opponents.
