Dundalk are set to raid Town for keeper McCarey

- BY GRAHAM LUNEY

DUNDALK are set to sign Warrenpoint Town goalkeeper Aaron McCarey as competition for Gary Rogers after the departure of long-serving No.2 Gabriel Sava was confirmed.

Sava announced that he was leaving Dundalk after a trophy-laden five years where he was primarily the back-up keeper, although he did get a run in the side in 2016 during a rough patch for Rogers and played in a Europa League tie against Zenit St Petersburg.

Stephen Kenny has identified Monaghan man McCarey as the right fit for his squad.

The ex-Wolves stopper has been in sparkling form for Warrenpoint after his summer release from Scottish side Ross County following their relegation from the SPL.

But that is only a short-term arrangement and Warrenpoint are resigned to losing McCarey in January.

Dundalk is the 26-year-old’s intended destination.

McCarey has played for the Republic of Ireland through the age group levels and Martin O’Neill brought him to Turkey last March. • LISBURN man Johnny McKinstry has been appointed manager of Bangladesh Premier League side Saif Sporting Club. The former Sierra Leone and Rwanda national team head coach has linked up with the team this week.

The former coach of the cashrich club, Stewart Hall, stepped down and recommended McKinstry for the role.

Saif Sporting Club’s managing director Nasiruddin Chowdhury said: “We asked him to find us a suitable replacement who can understand our style and players. Jonathan is a high profile coach. He was given a deal that lasts until the end of the season.”
