Dungannon aim to keep climbing with another win

- BY ADRIAN RUTHERFORD

PAUL McElroy has targeted back-to-back wins as Dungannon Swifts take on Warrenpoint Town in a crunch clash today.

A crucial month continues as two of the bottom four in the Danske Bank Premiership meet at Milltown.

Dungannon have been slowly climbing out of trouble, and can further ease the pressure with victory this afternoon.

A point at Ards took them off the bottom, and a first league win since September against Institute, where they came from behind, moved them out of the relegation zone.

McElroy said three more points at Warrenpoint would make for a satisfying return from a key sequence of fixtures.

“We’ve a run of games where we are looking to pick up points,” he said.

“We targeted seven points from the three games (Ards, Institute and Warrenpoint) to try and climb the table.

“Hopefully in the weeks to come, we can put a bit of a run together and by Christmas get ourselves out of trouble.

“We believe we can do it. The quality in our squad is fantastic and you see it week in, week out in training.

“We play games and we never get battered — we are not losing 3-0 or 4-0.

“You look at our goal difference compared to the rest of the sides at the bottom.

“We’ve shown belief too — at Ards we came back twice to draw, and on Saturday we’ve been behind and come back to win.

“It shows a winning mentality and a mentality not to give up.”

Dungannon made a terrible start to the season, winning just one of their first 13 games to leave them bottom.

They also lost inspirational head coach Rodney McAree in September.

But under new boss Kris Lindsay they have shown signs of a return to form, and McElroy believes they are better than the table suggests.

“We’ve said for weeks that we have the quality here and the league table doesn’t actually reflect how good our squad is,” he added.
