Man taken to hospital after crashing bike admits racially abusing doctor

- BY NEVIN FARRELL

A CO Derry man launched an “unpleasant racist diatribe” at a doctor at Coleraine’s Causeway Hospital, a court heard yesterday.

Niall Samuel McIlmoyle (27) from Foundry Court admitted being disorderly at the hospital in September this year and also pleaded guilty to a charge of “dangerous cycling”.

A prosecutor told Coleraine Magistrates Court that after a domestic incident, police saw McIlmoyle on a bicycle in Coleraine town centre.

He failed to stop and cycled in front of a car, causing a collision. He got up and ran off, but after being caught and taken to hospital he was agitated and aggressive. He shouted: “I’m not f ***ing waiting here to be treated by some Paki b ****** doctor” and then told police he was going to “go f ***ing mad and wreck the place”, the court heard.

McIlmoyle also pleaded guilty to making a threat to damage a woman’s property in Coleraine town centre on July 11 this year, when he said he would burn her out by petrol bombing her home.

Defence barrister Stephen Law said both incidents were “reprehensible”. He said the offences came against the backdrop of McIlmoyle taking excess medication mixed with illegal substances and alcohol, which meant he had been in a “highly agitated state without restraint”.

District Judge Peter King said both matters warranted custody.

The judge said there had been an “unpleasant racist diatribe” Niall McIlmoyle admitted being disorderly at a hospital in September and threatening to damage a woman’s home at the hospital which the court viewed extremely seriously and a message had to be sent out.

However, Judge King said the defendant was currently working through a 200 hour community service order and McIlmoyle had ended up back in court because he had stopped taking his medication.

The judge said he would defer sentencing for six months but if the defendant reoffended, failed to complete community service or engage with probation requirements, he faced starting off with a five month jail term when he came back to court.

Judge King told McIlmoyle: “I’m taking a chance on you.”

A three year restraining order was put in place regarding McIlmoyle and the woman he had threatened.
