Sarri desperate to win a trophy sooner than later

- BY IAN BAKER

MAURIZIO Sarri does not feel he would still be in charge of Chelsea if he went four years without winning a trophy.

Sarri comes up against Mauricio Pochettino tonight at Wembley Stadium with the Argentine still without any silverware since joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Both Chelsea and Spurs are amongst the chasing pack in the Premier League and may have to turn to competitions other than the Premier League if they wish to win anything, thanks to the dominance of Manchester City.

“I don’t think so, but I don’t know,” said Sarri when asked if he would be afforded four years without any trophies. “It’s up to the club, I think. I don’t know.

“I want to win something just to avoid this question. Sometimes there are the conditions for winning. Sometimes not. Maybe Pochettino is not in the condition to win at the moment.

“In the Premier League there is for sure one team stronger. Maybe two. So it’s very difficult to win if you’re not the best team. Sometimes it’s difficult to win even if you are the best team.

“It’s clear he’s a very important coach, with a trophy or without a trophy.”

Sarri meanwhile suggested the one Tottenham player he would sign if he could is Christian Eriksen.

The Danish playmaker is out of contract in 18 months, with Spurs concerned about losing him. But Sarri believes he is more important to them than Harry Kane.

“Of course Harry Kane is the best English striker in the moment, so a very important player, but if I have to say another name, I like very much Eriksen,” he said.

“Because he is a very smart player, a very technical player. He’s able to play in midfield and, at the same moment, score eight or nine goals in a season. I think that he is a very important player.

Sarri also dismissed suggestions from Pochettino than Chelsea have it easy as they do not play Champions League football.

“It’s very difficult if you play in Madrid against Real to be ready after three days from a mental point of view, yes,” added Sarri.

“But, on the other hand, in the Europa League you have to play on Thursday. From a physical point of view, no.”
