VAR denies Davis as Leicester keep cool in shoot-out

LEICESTER are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shoot-out win against Southampton.

After a goalless draw at the King Power, there were 10 successful kicks before Danny Ward saved Manolo Gabbiadini’s attempt. Nampalys Mendy then scored to put Leicester through to the last-eight, where they will host Man City on December 18.

It was harsh on Southampton, who had the better chances during 90 minutes. But Leicester progressed in the tie rearranged in the wake of the helicopter crash which killed chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

Southampton slowly assumed control, making Leicester defend for long periods, although without troubling Ward.

Leicester’s best moment came with 10 minutes remaining. Demarai Gray ran beyond Steven Davis and Cedric Soares before flashing a shot narrowly wide.

Southampton thought they had broken the deadlock when a weaving run from Nathan Redmond was finished off by Northern Ireland captain Davis, but the goal was ruled out by VAR after Redmond was adjudged to have handled the ball. • STUART Dallas netted the winner and Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved a penalty as Leeds kept the pressure on Championship leaders Norwich with a 1-0 victory over Reading at Elland Road.

The Royals finally buckled under the constant pressure when Dallas struck on the hour mark.

Dallas’ Northern Ireland teammate Peacock-Farrell then took centre stage in a dramatic finale, securing back-to-back wins by saving Marc McNulty’s penalty.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side leapfrogged Middlesbrough into second place in the table.
