This feels like a victory, reveals proud Gerrard

RANGERS boss Steven Gerrard hailed the grit of his players after grinding out a scoreless draw against Villareal at Ibrox last night.

Gerrard said he would have to watch the controversial sending off of Daniel Candeias, who seemed very unfortunate to be shown a red card, again.

On the sending-off, Gerrard said: “There might be a case of mistaken identity, I’m not sure. We rolled our sleeves up and dug in.

“We are an inexperienced team, they are all hungry and eager. Sometimes you get it wrong, emotions are flying high.

“But we do have to try and stop making these mistakes that are making things so much more difficult for us.”

Rangers need to beat Rapid Vienna in Austria on December 13 to qualify.

Gerrard said: “We will see in two weeks. I said we need four points from two games. I can’t wait for it. This feels like a win for us after going down to 10 men. There is still 90 minutes to play and we have an unbelievable opportunity to get into the last 32.”

Keeper Allan McGregor, who was excellent in goal for Rangers, said: “The boys dug in well. I don’t think they looked like scoring and we could have scored ourselves. At half-time we would have taken a point. To have a chance to qualify for the last 32 is really good.”

On Candeias’ red, McGregor said: “I thought it was the wrong man, but I need to watch it again.”
