Politicians attend summit to discuss loneliness epidemic
POLITICIANS from all sides are meeting to discuss how to combat the growing epidemic of loneliness.
The summit, which also includes representatives of the public, voluntary and community sectors, is being chaired by SDLP MLA Sinead Bradley who said that the impact of the problem was much more destructive than previously realised.
“It is a sad reality that many people go for long periods on end without engaging in conversation, interacting with community or experiencing care from others.
“Therefore, it is imperative that society better understands the extreme effects loneliness can have on a person,” she commented.
Ms Bradley said modern medical reports had revealed how loneliness could undermine physical and men- tal health. She added that it could also increase mortality to an extent comparable with risk factors such as obesity and smoking.
The South Down representative continued: “Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland are all well under way in developing strategies and policy to manage this tragic societal problem.
“I am pleased that representatives from across all political parties in Northern Ireland, despite the political impasse, have agreed to join with me to give this matter the urgent attention it deserves.
“I am also delighted that the Commissioner for Older People will be attending.”
Ms Bradley added: “We must recognise and tackle the many triggers that may result in a person experiencing a time in their life that leaves them feeling deeply sad, lacking friends, or unable to connect with others around them.”
