Change at the Saffrons after McCavana voted new chairman

IT seems that the thread of success which is now sweeping through the St Enda’s club has infiltrated the corridors of power while the team enjoys unprecedented progress on the field of play.

Just 48 hours after the Glengormley side clinched the Ulster intermediate club football championship title for the first time, club dynamo Ciaran McCavana was elected chairman of the Antrim county board at last night’s convention.

McCavana, who heads up an accountancy practice which has offices in Belfast and Dublin, fended off the challenge of Eoin Elliott and Joe Edwards to succeed Collie Donnelly in the top office.

The new Saffrons supremo has been a driving force behind the St Enda’s revival that now sees the club focus on an All-Ireland club semi-final.

Outgoing chairman Donnelly, meanwhile, told delegates that Antrim have turned the corner on various fronts.

“Antrim are definitely out of decline and I now believe we are in a stable position with a solid foundation,” declared Donnelly. “Our Gaelfast programme can surely give us much-needed additional resources to promote Gaelic games throughout the county.”

He also made an impassioned plea to delegates to do all in their power to see discipline improved within the association.

“Discipline nationally in our games over the past year reached an all-time low in my view and I would implore all club officers to stand up and make the hard calls before we have a one-punch fatality,” Donnelly added.
