H&J Martin reaches new stage of major Salford project

- BY STAFF REPORTER

LOCAL building firm H&J Martin has celebrated the latest stage of a major project it’s carrying out in Manchester.

The firm, part of the Lagan Construction Services Group, marked the ‘topping out’ of an 18-storey build to rent scheme of 263 apartments and townhouses in Salford.

H&J Martin is doing the work on behalf of Outwood Developments and Invesco Real Estate. The build is being carried out using off-site pre-fabrication.

Simon Richards, construction director at H&J Martin, said: “The team are delighted to reach this significant milestone at Outwood Wharf phase one.

“This project is leading the way in lean construction and is testament to the whole project team including SCC and the wider supply chain.”

SCC Design Build, which is based in Stockport, designed and installed 3,064 precast units.

Eamonn O’Donnell, managing director of SCC Design Build, said: “Our modular precast system generally reduces the programme of works by around 40% in comparison to traditionally built projects and It also delivers real efficiencies.

“These efficiencies are realised throughout all stages of the project and life of the building, not just the construction phase.

“Precast concrete is not just robust, which contributes to reductions in long term maintenance costs of a building, it is also thermally very efficient which reduces the occupant’s energy usage, energy costs and carbon emissions.

“It was therefore a great solu- tion for Outwood Wharf.” Over the next few months, fit-out and installation of kitchens, bathrooms and joinery is due to take place, with the scheme to finish in the summer.

H&J Martin became part of the Lagan Construction Group around four years ago. The group announced an extension to its premises at Titanic Quarter to make room for 250 H&J Martin staff.
