CO Antrim designer Nicola Glass is continuing to take the fashion industry by storm as she unveiled her second collection for one of the world’s biggest fashion houses at New York Fashion Week.

Nicola, who is from Templepatrick and attended Belfast Royal Academy, is the creative director at Kate Spade.

Following on from the success of her debut collection, which was released at New York Fashion Week last September, she was back again to present the pieces from her Fall 2019 range at the weekend.

Movie star Maggie Gyllenhaal was on hand to catch a first glimpse of the collection, while actresses Sadie Sink, Julia Jones and Julia Garner were also spotted in front row seats.

Speaking as the collection hit the runway, Nicola said: “This season I started by imagining raiding an insanely glamorous woman’s closet, and the rich, eclectic mix you’d find that you could make your own.

“For Fall 2019, I was inspired by the idea of a woman’s closet and the thought of where clothes end up rather than where they originated.

“I envisioned women who are looking for clothes that are spirited, feminine and fundamentally effortless. There’s a soft glamour to this collection... an easy fluidity.”

A review of the collection on the website Fashionista was glowing, describing “fresh and appealing” high waisted flares and “deep saturated colours”.

It continued: “It was, overall, a more sophisticated collection than what many customers might be accustomed to seeing on the runway (and the silk turbans were the one miss, better in idea than in execution).

“But really, with such a gorgeously mixed palette of dark green and lilac purple paired together, or coral pink with wine reds, how could they possibly mind?”

Nicola has previously spoken of the importance of following your heart when it comes to choosing a career.

She originally went to Edinburgh University to study architecture, before quickly shifting to Edinburgh Art College where she gained a BA in jewellery design.

From there she went on to gain a Masters degree in fashion accessories at the Royal College of Art, London.

After graduating, Nicola briefly worked for British company Bamford before joining Gucci, and was the only handbag designer on the team who wasn’t Italian.

She replaced the long standing creative director at Kate Spade, Deborah Lloyd, in 2017 and has been tasked with developing and growing the American fashion house globally.
