- BY STAFF REPORTER

THE funerals of two men from Northern Ireland who were killed in a car crash in Co Louth will be held this week.

Shane McAnallen and Martin Patterson, who were both in their 20s, were killed in the crash on the Cooley Peninsula near Carlingford in the early hours of Monday morning.

Mr Patterson’s funeral will be held today at noon at St Patrick’s Church in Bryansford, Co Down, followed by a burial in the adjoining graveyard.

A funeral notice read: “Devoted son of Colin and Angela, loving brother of James and Danielle and treasured grandson of Jim and Joy (Brown) and Kathleen and the late Martin (Patterson).

“Martin will be sadly missed by his father, mother, brother, sister, grandparents, also Kenny, the Patterson and Brown families and his many friends.”

Mr McAnallen’s funeral will be held on Saturday at 9.30am at St Malachy’s Church in Castlewellan, followed by a burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery in Bryansford.

A funeral notice read: “Shane, dearly beloved son of Michael and Bernie and cherished brother of Michaela and Laura R.I.P.

“On his soul sweet Jesus have mercy. Deeply regretted by his sorrowing father, mother, sisters, grandmother, aunts, uncles and entire family circle.”

It is understood the car was travelling north, towards the border, on the R173 Carlingford to Omeath Road at the time of the crash.

It is believed it may have crossed into the southbound lane, before crashing into a ditch following a bad bend in the road.

The two men were pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Louth County Hospital in Dundalk for post-mortem examinations.

Gardai are investigating the crash.

However, the incident has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman, as it is believed gardai had tried to stop the car before it crashed.
