Van thrills fans with intimate shows at Heaney HomePlace

SIR Van Morrison delighted fans at three sold-out shows this week at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace — the building dedicated to celebrating the life and literature of the Nobel Prize-winning poet.

Fans were treated to an intimate concert with just 206 people per show on Thursday, August 1 and two yesterday at Seamus Heaney’s HomePlace’s theatre The Helicon.

The world-acclaimed performer took to the stage in his trademark striped suit and trilby, performing some of his most loved songs, including Have I Told You Lately, St Dominic’s Preview, Moondance, Ballerina and many more.

The atmosphere was electric as the audience gathered from around 20 countries from across the world to bask in the special setting of these much sought-after concerts.

Van’s voice and musicianship soared through the unique venue where he was accompanied by his six-piece band. After each show the audience was left both amazed and stunned with attendees commenting: “It’s like watching him in his living room” and “the best show I have ever seen”.

As the shows came to a close the crowd rose to their feet cheering as Van exited still singing with his very last step off the stage.

Martin Kearney, chair of Mid Ulster District Council, added: “Much like Seamus Heaney, Van’s words have touched people throughout the world and it was honour to host such a recognised and celebrated musician, especially one from our very own shores.”

Seamus Heaney HomePlace is a purpose-built arts and literary centre, which celebrates the life and work of the late poet and Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney, and contributes to his legacy.

The Helicon, located in Seamus Heaney’s hometown of Bellaghy, is an intimate performance space, designed with a nod to the Greek theatre which Seamus Heaney so loved.
