Frazer out of the Euros after latest injury blow

ULSTER’S Megan Frazer looks certain to miss Ireland’s European Championship campaign, which begins in Antwerp next week, after yet another injury.

The 28-year-old has suffered damage to her knee and wasn’t included in the squad which travelled to Belgium for a dry run and two warm-up internationals against the tournament hosts tomorrow and Friday.

It’s the latest in a catalogue of injury blows for the influential midfielder (right), who was sidelined for 19 months after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament and partially tearing her medial ligament in a freak training accident with Mannheimer in October 2016.

Frazer had only just joined the top German outfit after spearheading an historic pair of Irish Senior Cup triumphs for Ulster Elks when she fell awkwardly.

But the injury required three surgeries and ruled her out of the two qualifying tournaments that ultimately led to Ireland booking a place in the World Cup finals for the first time in 16 years.

The Londonderry woman was passed fit for the showpiece in London but she was laid low by a hamstring problem and had to sit out the final.

Frazer returned for the FIH Hockey Series in Banbridge in June. It was there that she suffered her latest setback, and the knee injury meant she didn’t feature in Ireland’s last two matches. She hasn’t played since, having sat out a total of five internationals, and with five more to come in the space of 10 days at the Euros, she won’t be risked.

She will hope to make a full recovery in time for the final eliminator for the Tokyo Olympics in late October or early November.
