PSNI appeal after two vehicles set on fire in Bangor estate

- BY CHRISTOPHER LEEBODY

TWO vehicles were left gutted after an arson attack in a housing estate in Bangor.

A grey BMW car and a grey Ford Transit van had their windscreens smashed and the insides of the vehicles were destroyed by fire at around 12.10am yesterday morning.

Local residents claim both are owned by the same man. People spoke of their shock, saying it was a quiet area.

The PSNI and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene in Ballynoe Gardens within the Kilcooley estate in the morning.

However, the area was quiet yesterday afternoon.

One elderly resident whose property overlooks the lay-by said: “I didn’t even hear it happening. I was in bed in the back room. The first I knew of it this morning was when police knocked at the door.

“There’s normally cars driving past and through the area. Nothing unusual happened, particularly last night.”

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, described it as a “tight-knit and close community where everyone knows each other”.

The resident, who has lived in the area for over 50 years, said it is “usually very quiet” and there are “rarely any problems with kids or anti-social behaviour”.

He added that this is the first time anything like this has ever happened before.

The PSNI has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: “Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information that can assist with the investigation to contact officers in Newtownards on 101 quoting reference 10 of 06/08/19.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
