Aquarium plan ‘could boost local economy’

- BY MARK McCONVILLE

THE developer of a new £10m aquarium proposed for Belfast’s Titanic Quarter expects the project to have a positive “wider ripple effect” on Northern Ireland’s economy.

London-based company ReefLIVE confirmed there would be 40 operational roles created if its aquarium goes ahead, and a further 60 jobs created during the construction process.

They expect the opening of the aquarium to have a ripple effect as they aim to attract 300,000 visitors annually.

Keith Thomas, managing director, also said that there would be no mammals, whales, large sharks, dolphins or other animals not deemed suitable to be kept in activity.

“We want to tell the story of how all the seas are one ocean,” he added.

“We will have 500 tonnes of sea water and will build an Indonesian coral reef which will host everything from turtles and reef sharks to colourful and exotic craw fish.

“There will be a digital and augmented reality to tell the stories of mammals, whales, large sharks and dolphins.

“We’ ll also tell the story of the sea around the island of Ireland and the conservation pressures.”

Mr Thomas also confirmed the company would focus on the aquarium in Northern Ireland but if it was successful they may open more in other parts of the UK. He added that they had always been keen on the “prime location”.

“We have always been excited by the potential of Belfast and Titanic Quarter,” he said.

“We are looking forward to being part of NI’s tourism sector.”
