Polish-born pupil top at school

ALTHOUGH he only moved to Northern Ireland with “basic” English six years ago, a Polish-born pupil has bagged an impressive 11 GCSE top grades.

Adrian Suchorski (16), a pupil of St Ronan’s College in Lurgan, was the highest achieving boy at the all-ability grammar school.

He was awarded eight A*s and three As, with one of the As being in English Language.

“I did some extra English lessons before coming here, but most of it I learnt at school,” he said.

“I want to do Maths, Further Maths, Art and Media Studies for A-level and afterwards I am going to England, probably London, to do an animation degree.”

Another top achiever with firm career aspiration­s was Andrew Haire (17), from Aghagallon, who was “pretty happy” with his three A*s, six As and one B.

With a future in computer programmin­g in mind, he is opting for A-levels in Systems Software Developmen­t, Maths, Physics and Further Maths (AS Level).

“There are a variety of pathways I can take — a degree course or possibly an apprentice­ship,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sinead Donohoe (17), from Magheralin, achieved six A*s and four As. Sinead wants to do History, English Literature and Religious Education at A-level, and is considerin­g law at QUB. “I just love the sound of law and I love writing essays,” she said.

Fellow student Yvette Moore (16), from Portadown, who notched up six A*s, two As and two Bs, also wants to study law “to help people”.

And Fionnuala McGuinness (16), from Aghagallon, with a tally of three A*s, three As, three Bs and one C, is considerin­g a career in journalism or “doing something with history and politics”.
