PM warned against peace process ‘gamble’ over Brexit
William Miller: Invoking the gunman (whom they otherwise would jail) much as turning a blind eye to the gunman when he was useful to the wrecking of the Northern Ireland economy.
Jeffrey Stinson: The Europeans are not happy tonight. Little Leo has tied you up in knots, so Merkel will do your talking.
Ricky Millar: What peace process? There is no peace process. Sure, didn’t dissidents shoot someone last night?
Dean McAuley: Ifin doubt, threaten the UK. If the backstop was so important, why did the EU offer a free trade agreement first off, which dealt with the border issue? Theresa May was a disaster as PM, trying to bind the UK to EU for years ahead.
Jack Foster: The EU offered us a free trade agreement with zero tariffs on goods. The Government should grab it. Problem is, we had a Remain Government and a majority of UK citizens wanting to leave.
Kevin Connolly: So the backstop was Britain’s idea?
Rob O’Neill: There will be a backstop or there won’t be a Brexit at all. If they manage to pull Northern Ireland out without a deal then a border poll will be on the immediate horizon. Robert Stevenson: The backstop is going in its current form. Merkel told Boris ‘give us your alternatives’. That’s a start.
John Croy: Can I have the winning numbers for Friday’s EuroMillions please, Mystic Meg?
Rob O’Neill: The alternative is an NI-only backstop.
Scott Devenay: That’s what is in the withdrawal agreement. Do keep up. Rob O’Neill: Incorrect. The current backstop (rejected by Parliament three times) is UK-wide. Parliament has not yet given any indication on how it would vote if offered the withdrawal agreement with a NI-only backstop. And, given many Brexiteers (Boris included) voted for a UK-wide backstop last time when time was running out, a Northern Ireland-only one may change the arithmetic even further.
