Correspondent has a right to choose, but not to demonise those whose beliefs differ from hers

- D HALLIGAN Whitehead, Co Antrim

FIONOLA Meredith’s recent criticism of Jim Wells (Comment, September 6) is typical of those in the PC brigade who continually espouse “gay rights” while ridiculing and demonising those whose beliefs they disagree with.

I’m not a supporter of Mr Wells, but the man does have a right to his beliefs and a right to express them.

Fionola states that, when her children were young, she hired a lesbian couple to be their babysitter, as she wanted them to know that lesbianism was normal. She has a right to make that choice, but makes the same mistake as the rest of her ilk in suggesting that lesbianism and homosexuality are normal.

What other sexual preferences were considered for the job? Or was it samesex only?

I wonder if, in her desire to indoctrinate her children, did she consider hiring a normal, (that word again) heterosexual, Christian couple as babysitters, in order to give her children an understanding of the feelings of others who don’t accept same-sex relationships as normal and, thus, provide them with a more balanced view.

Probably not; after all, such people are only “pantomime, anti-gay bogeymen”, professing silly religious beliefs from the Jurassic period and who should be pooh-poohed out of sight.

I would suggest her self-congratulatory decision on the babysitting front was not so much about her children’s education but more to do with enhancing her own profile as a liberal, righton, ever-so-progressive, freethinking modern champion of minority issues.

Children often rebel against their parents’ views and values. We all did, to some extent, probably none more so than Ms Meredith. It is part of growing up. I wonder how she would feel if, down the line, her kids rejected her values and agreed with Mr Wells.
