CHINESE supermarket Camseng International is planning a £8m apartment complex that will replace the current retail premises at the south Belfast site, it can be revealed.

Like Architects has been appointed by Camseng International to design a modern apartment building for the site off the Lisburn Road.

It is hoped a planning application will be submitted next month.

A decision on the application is expected to be made early next year, with work on the new building currently scheduled to begin in March.

Camseng International is looking for suitable alternative facili

ties close to the M1 in south Belfast as part of its expansion plans following on from the planned demolition of the Lisburn Road premises.

Like Architects said that construction of the 76 unit apartment complex, which will be made of one and two-bedroom

apartments, represents a major investment for the Lisburn Road area.

Around 50 jobs are expected to be creating during the construction phase.

Camseng International is currently located just off the Lisburn Road, facing onto both Lower Windsor Avenue and Lorne Street. Working with O’Toole and Starkey Planning Consultants, Like Architects said they had developed a design which “fits well with the location” and will also provide a more suitable use of the site, which is surrounded by residential properties.

Michael Martin, director of Like Architects, said: “This attractive residential scheme will deliver much-needed accommodation in close proximity to the Lisburn Road, one of Belfast’s main arterial routes.

“The new proposal will help to continue the regeneration of this area and complement similar residential developments nearby.

“The building has been designed to represent a modern aesthetic, with quality materials, landscaped courtyard and roof gardens which will help to create a quality living environment.”

The plans are the latest in a series of developments that are breathing new life into the area.

In April, it emerged that around 50 new jobs will be created as part of a £12m plan to build apartments on the Lisburn Road between Lislea Drive and Lislea Avenue, currently home to long-established businesses, including healthy eating cafe Tony & Jen’s, ladieswear shop Max Mara and a Kwik Fit tyre-fitting workshop and garage.

Meanwhile, a planning application has now been submitted for 650 homes on an 85-acre site in west Belfast.

Braidwater Group, based in Londonderry, plans to start the social and affordable housing build at Glenmona next year.
