Mone and Corey ponder return to Monaghan duty
MONAGHAN veterans Dessie Mone (35) and Vinny Corey (36) have not ruled out a return to county football in 2020 and a reunion with the reappointed Seamus ‘Banty’ McEnaney.
The pair were to the fore as Clontibret swept to the Monaghan SFC title on Sunday in Clones and in the process collected their seventh senior medals, 17 years after they won their first as teenagers in 2002.
And both men, who played key roles for the Oriels in McEnaney’s previous reign, will assess their inter-county futures after Clontibret’s interest in the Club Championship comes to an end.
“I was talking to (McEnaney) and said I’ll leave it until after the Club Championship finishes. I’ll leave it a few weeks and decide then, so I haven’t made any decision,” said Corey.
Mone described Sunday’s win as “one of the sweetest” of his seven wins but won’t make any decision until later in the year.
“The last few years I’ve always seen how the club season went first and made sure the body was right,” he said. “We are going to be in the Ulster Club now, so my focus is on that, and I’ll chat to Banty in a couple of months.”
Conor McManus also starred for Clontibret, and he hailed the win as a “massive effort” from the entire club after they flirted with relegation to the intermediate grade last season.
“This time of year when you are in the yellow and white and you are playing Club Championship games and winning Championships, you’d play all day,” he said.
