Student gunman kills two teens on his birthday in US school shooting

TWO people were shot dead yesterday in a Los Angeles high school shooting after a boy went on a gun rampage on his 16th birthday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said a 14-yearold boy died at a hospital.

A 16-year-old girl caught up in the shooting at Saugus High School in the city of Santa Clarita, also died.

Three other teenagers were wounded.

The authoritie­s said a student gunman who had turned 16 yesterday shot five students and then himself in the head at around 7.30am in a school grounds.

His .45-caliber handgun was found with no bullets remaining inside.

The suspect was taken into custody and was being treated at a local hospital last night.

A 15-year-old girl, a 14-yearentere­d. old girl and a 14-year-old boy are being treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Their conditions were not immediatel­y known.

Student Rosie Rodriguez told reporters she was walking up the library stairs when she heard noises that “sounded like balloons” popping.

She realised they were gunshots when she saw other students running.

“I’m not a target and this is unfortunat­ely Trump’s America,” she said.

“I’m going to stand up for gun control.”

Parent Tony Barrett added: “You hear about it all the time and now it’s finally (happened) at home.

“You always see it on the news and don’t think that it’ll happen to you.”
