Swifts’ young talent out to stop Newington repeat

Edouard will score many more: Jullien

- BY ROBERT JONES

“We are easy on the eye and that’s important to me. We work very hard in training to try and play the same way as the first team.

“Teams look at us and they probably think they have to be physical against us, but I like us to stick to our guns and play good football. Nothing would please me more than to see us winning and playing well at the same time.

“Last time we reached the final we played well in the semi-final and quarter-final and were favourites to beat Newington, but it never worked out like that. There were nerves on the final day.

“Hopefully we can show what we are all about in this decider.”

CELTIC’S Christopher Jullien has hailed the class of fellow Frenchman and scorer Odsonne Edouard in the 2-1 win over Aberdeen at the weekend.

Edouard’s goal, his 16th of the season, proved to be the winner, and underlined his importance to the team.

And Jullien, who opened the scoring, was delighted for his fellow countryman, even if he told him he should have scored a few more on the day.

“I was the first to say to Odsonne (right) at halftime, ‘You’re going to score, don’t worry!’” Jullien said.

“He’s been just unbelievable since the start of the season, and even before I came to Celtic. We know he’s a threat and if he keeps getting chances, we know he’s going to score a lot of goals.

“For me, and I told him at the end of the game, he probably should have had five or six goals. But he knows that. He’s a great striker, he knows his strengths and we really trust in him.

“He’s just Odsonne! He’s like that in real life, and on the field, he just does what he does best. He’s one of the best strikers I’ve played with in the final third, and his left-foot finish, after all the chances he had before, to keep that mental strength and know he’s going to score again, is good for us.”

Celtic head into their last two fixtures of 2019 — an away game against St Mirren on Boxing Day and a Glasgow derby at Paradise on Sunday — with a five-point lead at the top of the Premiership table.
