On lookout: Niall Currie is keen to bring in new faces
NIALL Currie admits the January transfer window can’t come quickly enough.
The Carrick Rangers boss has seen his squad depleted in recent weeks and with another two games before he can bring in new players, their depth is likely to be tested further.
The first of those tests is the lengthy trip to take on Institute at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium today.
“We’re going to have three or four players unavailable for this game,” he said. “We normally play with a back three, but we’re out of centre-halves to be honest so we might have to look at different shapes.
“We do have Stewart Nixon back, which is a big plus for us.
“I can’t praise these boys highly enough, though. Away to Larne, we had a 16, a 17 and an 18-year-old on the bench.
“Kids like that need eased in, but we’re having to throw them into situations.
“Ultimately, we need bodies in as soon as possible. That’s what the club is working on and the chairman in particular.
“We’re working off 16 senior players at the minute, along with four kids, so we need to bulk it out a bit.
“There are two or three areas in particular we want to strengthen and we have identified our targets and made contact with their clubs.
“The chairman is working hard on that and sometimes you have to wait on clubs and their own business, but we definitely need them in ASAP.”
Carrick go to Institute on the back of a morale-boosting 0-0 draw away to rivals Larne on Boxing Day, with Currie more than happy with what he saw from his side.
“We had a couple of really good chances and we limited them over the course of the 90 minutes to very little and that is down to the players,” he said.
“The players are throwing their bodies on the line and they’re giving us absolutely everything.
“There are too many games this season where we have deserved a point and got nothing, so to get our point at Larne, we have to be happy with that.”
