Point chief thrilled as Gray commits his future
WARRENPOINT Town chairman Connaire Mcgreevy has predicted brighter days for the club after manager Barry Gray and his backroom team signed two-year contract extensions.
The new deal keeps the former Cliftonville boss in charge until at least the summer of 2022.
Point currently sit in 11th place in the Danske Bank Premiership table.
They were bottom of the table in October when Gray returned to the club but they now lie three points ahead of Institute.
Mcgreevy said he was “delighted” to reach a speedy agreement.
“Barry and the backroom team came in at a low point in the season,” he said. “They were quick to get buy-in from the players and used their first transfer window well with things clicking into place in the last eight games.
“The new players were grinding out results, making us one of the most in-form teams.
“We are confident they will deliver the results on the pitch next season and beyond.”
Gray replaced Stephen Mcdonnell and it’s hoped the club’s Premiership status can be secured following this week’s talks over how to curtail the season.
Top-flight clubs held talks last night following their rejection of the proposal put forward by NIFL’S Steering Group to either agree to another two rounds of league fixtures or accept a mathematical model.
• WYCOMBE Wanderers have announced that former Linfield striker Paul Smyth has extended his loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season.
The Northern Ireland international will remain with The Chairboys, who have enjoyed a fantastic campaign in Sky Bet League One, and they will compete in the end-of-season playoffs later this month.
When football was halted in March, Wycombe sat just outside of the top six. But they leapfrogged sixth-placed Peterborough United earlier this week, after the majority of League One clubs voted to curtail the regular season and decide clubs’ final placings on a points-per-game basis. They will now take on Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town.
