Wright still in frame to take United reins

MANCHESTER City formed a guard of honour for the newly crowned Premier League champions Liverpool before dishing out a 4-0 hammering at the Etihad Stadium last night.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds must still have been in party mode as a Kevin De Bruyne penalty and further goals from Raheem Sterling and the impressive Phil Foden gave City a commanding lead at the break. Alex Oxlade-chamberlain’s own goal on 66 minutes added to Liverpool’s misery and Riyad Mahrez thought he had scored the fifth before it was ruled out for a handball.

The embarrassing result was only Liverpool’s second league defeat of the season.

In the earlier game, Sheffield United picked up their first win since the Premier League restarted as they swept aside Tottenham 3-1.

Harry Kane had a goal ruled out by VAR when the Blades were leading 1-0 in the first half after Lucas Moura was deemed to have handled the ball.

“I think that moment is game over,” said Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

“I think in the second half my players were not mentally strong enough to cope with that disappointment and they have to be.”

DUNDEE United sporting director Tony Asghar insists Tommy Wright is still under consideration as the search for a new manager rumbles on.

The Tangerines are still on the hunt for Robbie Neilson’s replacement and suffered a blow when former England boss Steve Mcclaren ruled himself out of the race on Wednesday.

Mcclaren was one of those who had been interviewed by Asghar but there has been no such approach made to former St Johnstone gaffer Wright.

The former Northern Ireland keeper was keen to take over his national team but was pipped to the job by Ian Baraclough last weekend.

According to Asghar, though, Wright might now get a call from him.

The United sporting director claims that no one — including Mcclaren — has been offered the job.

“I’ve not spoken to Tommy but he’s on the list to consider,” Asghar said of the former St Johnstone boss.

“We’ve spoken to people — some in jobs, some not — and we’ve still got more to speak to.

“Some are still involved in games just now, so we have to be respectful of that, but we’ll get through everyone, then take an overview.”

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson also just missed out on the Northern Ireland job.

Fir Park ace Mark O’hara said: “It was a panicky time. I really enjoyed working with the manager last year and he was a big part of why I wanted to come back.”
