It won’t be long before we have a wardrobe of these things... for work and play

- Eimear Mcgovern

Leopard print, palm trees or your favourite football team — for those of us who choose to wear a facemask, there are many styles to choose from.

Wearing a facemask is no joke, but they do take up a surprising amount of real estate on your face, so I wanted to choose a facemask that would be both eye-catching and coordinate with my wardrobe.

When I chose to start wearing one while out and about at the start of lockdown, Etsy was my first stop for a homemade facemask that left surgical coverings to the professionals while supporting a small business owner who may have lost work during the pandemic.

A good mask for civilians combines both style and function with comfort, incorporating pretty patterns with layered protection and is suitable for machine washing.

I’m not alone — Billie Eilish wore a Gucci mask to the Grammys, while renowned Irish designer Helen Steele has created masks made from eco cotton.

Closer to home, I’ve seen a man in the supermarket wearing a Chelsea mask, while floral prints are the style of choice for others.

It won’t be long before many have a wardrobe of masks for both work and play.

My mask is pink with a tropical print and is reversible with a grey print on the other side. I liked it so much I bought masks for all my family, star prints for some and eye-catching peacock prints for others.

Facemasks are not a substitute for social distancing or good hand hygiene but along with polka dots and floral midi dresses, they look to be 2020’s foremost fashion accessory.
