No transfer rush at Old Trafford: Ole

target after securing a thirdplace league finish and a place in next season’s Champions League.

But when asked about forthcoming transfer business yesterday, Solskjaer was relaxed about the need to bring players in early.

“This transfer window is a long one and every transfer takes its course,” the United manager said. “It is what it is at the moment. I’ve got no updates for you anyway. If there is any news, we’ll update you.”

United return to action with the resumption of the Europa League tonight. Solskjaer’s side face a last-16 decider against LASK Linz at Old Trafford, leading 5-0 from March’s first leg.

Solskjaer is also hopeful of adding reinforcements at centre-back, though left the door open for Chris Smalling to return to first-team action next season after his impressive loan spell at Roma ended.

The Serie A club failed to extend the 30-year-old’s season-long stay or secure a permanent transfer, which would have allowed him to play the remainder of their Europa League campaign.

Smalling (above) cannot be registered as part of United’s Europa League squad either and said he was “gutted” that his time in Italy had come to an end, but Solskjaer has been impressed with his displays. “I think Chris has shown over his Man United career how valuable he is to Man United,” Solskjaer said. “This season was about him being a regular and showing how good a centre-back he is.

“I wanted to give Harry (Maguire), Victor (Lindelof ) and Axel (Tuanzebe) a chance so we found that was best for him, to go to Roma and play for a year. Now he’s coming back and he’s shown this season he’ll be valuable.

“I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout and I’ve been delighted with his season.”

Meanwhile, young left-back Brandon Williams has signed a new contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford until 2024 with the option of an extra year.
