THERE was much cause for celebration at St Dominic’s Grammar School on the Falls Road in west Belfast when the GCSE results came in yesterday morning.

Aoife Diamond (17) was flanked by her mum Donna and stepdad Aidan as she learned she had netted two A* in English literature and Spanish as well as As in art, biology, chemistry, English language, maths and religion and a B in physics.

“I was very worried as it has all been so unpredictable because we didn’t get to sit the exams,” Aoife said. “It certainly wasn’t as set in stone that you had some idea of how you’d got on.

“In the end it has turned out great so I’d got myself all worked up for no reason.”

Emma Agnew (16) was also celebrating success with her mum Julie with her seven A grades and a B. “She’s now a very happy and relaxed teenager having watched all the anxiety building up over the last while for everyone of her age,” said proud mum Julie.

“It’s such an emotional day after such a tough time that none of us could ever have imagined last September. In the circumstances we couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome,” she added.

Emma admitted feeling “cheated” at not being able to actually sit her exams but said she felt her teachers had been “fair”. She is now heading back to St Dominic’s next month to study maths, physics, finance and Irish at A-level.

Meanwhile, straight A student Rose Tucker was jumping for joy.

“I’m someone who works hard consistently throughout the year and around exam time I’d always be very stressed and worried,” she said. “Now to have an accurate representation of the work that I’d been producing has left me over the moon.”
