Frampton is feeling good as he awaits Herring date

- By David Kelly

CARL Frampton says he is more than happy with the start to training for his highly anticipated shot at WBO world super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring.

The fight, which is now more likely to take place in London than Belfast due to the impact of Covid restrictions on indoor sports, is expected to be staged late next month or even early February.

Frampton has returned to his base in Manchester with coach Jamie Moore in order to make sure that when a date and venue are rubber-stamped he is ready to crank up the intensity.

“I’m very pleased with the fitness level I had coming into camp. Everything has been going very well. It’s just a matter of shifting a few pounds, which is normal,” said Frampton, who has already spent a fortnight in Manchester.

The winner of t he Herring-frampton clash will have to face the WBO’S mandatory challenger and former featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson within 90 days.

When Frampton does move his training up a level, he has already made it clear that he is hoping to have reigning British super-featherweight champion Anthony Cacace as one of his main sparring partners.

“I think Anto would be the ideal sparring partner for this fight. He’s very big for the weight and he can really punch so you can’t switch off when you’re in with him,” said Frampton.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Okolie is waiting to hear whether he will still be fighting for a world title next weekend after it was announced Krzysztof Glowacki had pulled out of their bout for the vacant WBO cruiserweight crown.
