Town’s history boys cannot let levels drop: Mccaffrey

- By Steven Beacom

WARRENPOINT Town captain Fra Mccaffrey says the standard has been set at the club following their historic first victory over Linfield.

Mccaffrey was one of a team of heroes who deservedly beat the Blues 2-1 at home last Saturday, moving Barry Gray’s men into mid-table in the Irish Premiership.

Next up this weekend is a trip to Carrick Rangers, with the experienced midfielder wanting another dynamic display from the Milltown outfit.

“It was a super result and we owed ourselves it from our previous performance at Ballymena because we weren’t the best then. We knew playing Linfield we would have to up our performance,” said Mccaffrey.

“It wasn’t comfortable, but I think we dealt with Linfield very well and our game plan worked and we got the three points that we had been hoping for.

“We soaked the pressure up well. In the second half they di dn’t have many cl ear- cut chances and we coped with whatever they threw at us, which shows the experience we have in the team now.

“It means nothing, though, if in our next game we don’t perform like we did against Linfield. We need to be consistent and we have now set the standard. If we play like that every week I think we will be alright this season.”

On the history-making element, which saw a small number of volunteers and stewards give the Warrenpoint players a wonderful reception at the end of the Linfield game, Mccaffrey said: “That was brilliant. They do everything for us, they wash kits, make cups of tea, provide food so to give them something back made the win even more special.

“It is still early in the season and beating Linfield is just one game, but that is the direction we are going in and we want to compete with the best teams in these games.

“We drew with Larne and had a narrow defeat to Crusaders earlier in the campaign and now we have beaten Linfield. That’s encouraging, but we also need to perform well against the teams around us.”
