Road tragedy: Police name motorcyclist killed in Fivemiletown crash
A 21-year-old motorcyclist who died following a crash just outside Fivemiletown on Wednesday night has been named as William Weir.
The collision, involving a black ZNEN motorbike and a silver Volkswagen Polo, was reported to police just after 6pm on Wednesday and occurred on the Belfast Road between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough.
Police and other emergency services attended. The motorcyclist from the Maguiresbridge area, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew expressed her condolences.
“The community has been shocked and saddened by the death of a man in a crash between a motorcycle and a car on the Belfast Road between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough,” she said.
“Any death on our roads is one too many.
“My thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of the man who has lost his life in this tragic incident.”
SDLP councillor Garbhan Mcphillips said the collision was a tragedy and added that his thoughts were with the victim’s family and friends.
“I believe that this is the second or third fatality on that road in the last number of years,” he said.
“My deepest condolences go out to the man’s family and friends.
“They will be in my thoughts and prayers over the coming days and weeks.”
Earlier First Minister Arlene Foster tweeted: “Heartbreaking news from my neighbourhood. Our prayers are with this young man’s family who have been plunged into unimaginable grief. Please remember them.”
Police have issued an appeal for anyone who was on the Belfast Road around the time of the accident, and who witnessed the collision, or who may have captured what occurred on their dash cam, to call 101 and quote reference number 1559 of 16/12/20.
