Madigan: Coetzee has our respect and support to quit Ulster

Players fully understand why their South African team-mate wants to head home and play for the Bulls

OUT-HALF Ian Madigan has voiced the Ulster squad’s unequivocal support for Marcell Coetzee’s decision to quit the province and return home at the end of the season.

With some, including Ulster CEO Jonny Petrie, voicing disappointment that their star player is leaving for South Africa in the summer with a year still to serve at Ulster, Madigan was steadfast in his support of the player who was, yesterday, officially unveiled as a Bulls signing.

“Internally we know what’s happened with Marcell,” said the 31-year-old out-half, who starred in Ulster’s PRO14 victory over Connacht in Galway on Sunday.

“Every player in the club has the utmost respect for him.

“He came in during the week (of the Connacht game), stepped up and spoke really well. We all understand that he wants to go back to his home country.

“He’s a guy who comes in every day, gives 100 per cent in training, 100 per cent on the field, and we get that.”

Coetzee, who moved to Ulster in 2016 from the Sharks, will join the Pretoria-based Bulls on a three year-deal in July after finishing out this season with Ulster.

“Marcell is a phenomenal player and any team in the world would be ecstatic to have a player of his calibre joining its structures,” stated Bulls director of rugby Jake White.

“He has grown from strength to strength over the years and is currently playing some of the best rugby of his life. He’s excited about being back in South Africa and making Loftus his home.”

Coetzee, who has been capped 30 times by his country, admits: “Just from my side, really looking forward to joining the Vodacom Bulls in the 2021 season.

“Also, I can’t wait to come to Pretoria and my new home.”

The Bulls will take part in a new Rainbow Cup competition against PRO14 sides in April before likely joining the league next season.
