Cacace’s on Carl show, as Ward faces the Mountain

ANTHONY Cacace will make the first defence of his British super-featherweight title on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s world title shot on February 27 in London.

Belfast man Cacace will put his belt on the line against Leon Woodstock as he hopes to kick off the year with a bang in the supporting act to the Jackal’s battle with WBO world super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring.

Cacace’s manager Pat Magee believes it is the ideal stage for him to show his potential to push for a world title shot in 2021.

“This is going to be a great year for Anthony. These are tough times for every fighter but he has the chance to really push on with a win over Woodstock,” said Magee.

“Anthony has already got a world ranking so with another couple of wins I don’t see why he can’t be looking at a world title shot.”

Meanwhile, Belfast cruiserweight Steven Ward will today take on ‘The Mountain’ Thor Bjornsson, the star of Game of Thrones.

Bjornsson is hoping to gain a boxing licence for a fight later in the year and will start down that path in Dubai with a three-round exhibition with Ward.

Former WBO European light-heavyweight champion Ward has moved up to cruiserweight and is hoping to push towards a British title shot this year. First he will deal with the Mountain.

“I really don’t know what to expect from him. It’s going to be some experience,” said Ward.

“When it was first put to me I hadn’t a clue who he was and neither had my wife Cathy and then when I showed her a picture of him she was shocked. I think she has me dead and buried — she’ll have the life insurance policy papers out when I’m in with him!”

The exhibition will not be shown until tomorrow on Core Sports’ streaming service.
