Man charged with breaking nose of partner is refused bail by judge

- By Paul Higgins

A MAN appeared in Lisburn Magistrates Court yesterday accused of breaking the nose of his on-off partner.

Police allege that Jonathan Samuel Moore broke the woman’s nose during an argument, although the 33-year-old contends that she fell over during a “fourday drug binge”.

Moore, from Ards Drive in Newtownabbey, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and false imprisonment on January 12.

The complainant told police she had been with Moore at his mother’s house when they had an argument and he “became aggressive”, claiming she was frightened so tried to leave but Moore allegedly stopped her.

“He came behind her and grabbed her and trailed her to the kitchen by her hair,” said the officer, adding that Moore allegedly “threw her to the ground, causing her face to smash into the kitchen tiles”.

The court heard it took half a hour for her nose to stop bleeding and that she had undergone facial surgery to repair her nose.

Moore claimed to police he had “no idea what happened her nose” but that when she was at his mother’s house, she had been drinking and had taken ecstasy.

Police objected to bail because the alleged victim is “terrified and vulnerable”.

Defence solicitor Patrick Higgins said that according to Moore, “the injured party was on a four-day drug binge and she fell over”. He said that with neither witness nor CCTV evidence to corroborate her claims, conditions could be put in place to assuage police concerns.

Refusing to free Moore, however, District Judge Rosie Watters said she was “concerned about the commission of further offences”.

Remanding Moore into custody, she adjourned the case to February 8.
