Bomb outrage: device left at Camlough Lake

- By Staff Reporter

A BOMB was at the centre of a security alert in Camlough yesterday, according to SDLP Assembly member Justin Mcnulty.

Police closed off the Newtown Road at Camlough Lake, just outside the Co Armagh village yesterday morning following the discovery of a suspicious beer keg.

A similar device was found outside Keady last week.

Later yesterday, a section of shoreline on the south shore of Lough Neagh near Maghery was sealed off following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Chief Superintendent Andy Freeburn said: “While our enquiries are at an early stage, the discovery of these two objects follow security alerts which caused disruption to the community in the Keady area last week.”

Mr Mcnulty said the planting of the device in Camlough was a “reckless act that has no support in the local community, and, it could have claimed lives”.

“This is mindlessly reckless and has to be condemned. Those responsible are deluded if they think they have any support for their actions,” he said.

“This crude and viable device was left at one of south Armagh’s most popular beauty spots. It could have killed. It is frightening to think there are those in our community hell bent on dragging us back to the dark days of our past.”

Meanwhile, the Belfast Road in Carrickfergus has reopened following an earlier security alert yesterday. A suspicious object was examined and later declared as nothing untoward.
