States is an option if Dons deal isn’t renewed: Niall
NORTHERN Ireland star Niall Mcginn has admitted he would fancy a move to America to play Major League Soccer if he doesn’t land a new contract with Aberdeen.
The 33-year-old appreciates his wonder goal in the 2-1 friendly defeat to USA on Sunday would have been watched by millions Stateside, though would be happy to put his American dream on hold to work with the new management team of Stephen Glass and Scott Brown at Pittodrie.
Following the departure of Derek Mcinnes, Glass has been appointed boss and Mcginn’s former Celtic team-mate Brown will move to Aberdeen in the summer as player coach after a glittering career at Parkhead.
In his second spell with the Dons, Mcginn’s contract ends in May but he would love to stay in what he feels could be an exciting era for the club.
Quizzed on his future and a possible move to the United States, Mcginn said: “It definitely would interest me. I wouldn’t stay no. My best friend lives in San Francisco and it is a place I go to every year.
“I love the lifestyle and America in general. America would definitely be an option if that came up. It’s about weighing up all your options. I have to wait and see what will happen with Aberdeen first and then go from there.
“Stephen Glass is coming in as the manager and he sent me a message before the Italy game to wish me all the best and we’ll get a conversation when I go back.
“I had the opportunity to work with Brownie at Celtic and he is a born winner. He is a different type of character on the pitch to what he is like off the pitch and
I’m excited for what’s ahead at Aberdeen.
“I’m looking forward to working under both of them. It is an exciting period at Aberdeen. I’m out of contract in May and I believe there is still plenty of life in me yet, and I’ll be looking to get more opportunities club-wise between now and the end of the season and see where that takes me.
“It’s been a frustrating season for me so far. At the start I played a bit then picked up a little injury and different guys came in and did well which left me out of the team.
“I’ve always been the type to keep working hard and in the last four or five weeks I’ve played, which has been good. It’s down to me to take opportunities and it’s moments like the goal against the USA that will give food for thought for the new manager and hopefully show I’m worthy of a new contract.”
Mcginn, who said he owed Mcinnes a debt of gratitude for how he has helped him during his career, added that he feels Glass and Brown can bring trophies to Aberdeen.
“Yes, definitely. That’s what we want and hopefully they can come in and hit the ground running. We want to be competing at the top end of the table and constantly getting into Europe and getting to Cup finals as well. Hopefully we can do that and hopefully I can be a part of it.”
