Warrenpoint’s Danny Wallace has attracted admirers

BARRY Gray is hoping to keep Danny Wallace at Milltown but, even if the centre-back has plans to move on in the summer, the Warrenpoint Town manager trusts his player to give his best between now and then.

After a series of fine displays over recent seasons, Wallace has a growing list of admirers in the Irish Premiership, including Glenavon.

“Danny hasn’t signed a new contract for us for next season. We don’t know if he will or won’t. That’s very much Danny’s decision,” said Gray relation to his defender’s future.

“It’s not a case that we don’t want to have him here. He’s been a great servant for us but we will have to wait and see.

“I thought he was very good against Coleraine at the weekend. He’s been super and is focused on just playing at the moment and we have to respect his decision on that. If he is moving somewhere else, I’m not aware of it.

“He is out of contract at the end of the season and we don’t see any reason why we can’t trust him to play for the rest of the season and get the most out of him.”

This has been a fine season to date for the Point. They are ninth in the table, which is higher than many expected this term, and have historic victories against Linfield and Crusaders to look back on with pride.

The fact that they haven’t won in seven matches is not an area of concern for Gray ahead of tonight’s home game with Carrick Rangers.

“It’s not a stat we look at,” he insists.

“In this league, and in particular with the schedule at the moment, you can face three or four top sides in two weeks. Our performances have been quite good bar one or two. We have to keep a clear picture and a clear mindset about where we have come from and where we are now and be optimistic of where we are going moving forward.”

While Warrenpoint host Carrick, bottom of the table Dungannon Swifts travel to a Portadown side buoyed by a 2-0 victory over Niall Currie’s men at the weekend.

As disappointed as Currie was at the outcome, Ports boss Matthew Tipton was delighted and is hoping to build on that result and push for a strong finish to the campaign.

Meanwhile, all of the Danske Bank Premiership fixtures originally scheduled for 3pm this Saturday have now been moved to avoid a clash with the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

Prince Philip is due to be laid to rest at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle at 3pm on Saturday, which had previously coincided with the kick-off time of every weekend game bar Coleraine-glentoran and Portadown-cliftonville.
